I dusted off my rusty cast-iron crystal ball to make my guaranteed predictions for 2010. Every prediction I made last year came true with better accuracy than Nostradamus. It is beyond me why I’m not rich, better looking, have more hair, or running the United Nations. Take notes; I’m only going to say this once.

The stock market will pull back 10% during tax season and then grind higher the remainder of the year to close above 12,000 on the Dow.

Unemployment will decline the entire year, ending 2010 at 8.1% nationally; 5.9% by the end of 2011.

Commodity prices will decline the later part of 2010, including energy prices.

Inflation will remain tame; the CPI for 2010 will climb only 1.4%. As a result, interest rates will remain low, climbing at the very end of 2010. The Federal Reserve will sell assets off their balance sheet to moderate the economy.

The GDP will expand 5.1%.

Nationalized health care will be a reality. Taxes will go up now to pay for a program starting several years down the road.

The Democrats will continue to attract lightening from the right and will lose ground in Congress and the Senate. However, the Democrats will gain favor again as the economy accelerates and will regain some, but not all, ground in 2012. Obama will be re-elected in 2012. (Note: Don’t take this as an endorsement of Obama. This is my prediction, not my personal political beliefs.)

The world will not end in 2010 or 2012. Israel will strike against Iran with U.S. support in an attempt to destroy Iran’s nuclear efforts. Iran will have The Bomb by 2011 and will wave it around in wild threats. Russia will step in and bring Iran into line. Russia doesn’t want fallout floating over their southern border.

The winter of 2010-1 will bring another year of record snow for many areas and will be colder than normal. The winter of 2011-2 will be even worse, but the winter of 2012-3 will be the warmest on record. It will rain more than snow in places like Green Bay and Minneapolis. The summer of 2013 will be hot. Minneapolis and Green Bay will have temperatures over 105 F, breaking old all-time high records by several degrees.

Wind will provide 60% of new electricity production in 2010 in the U.S. Solar will grow slower, but will become meaningful by 2015. Natural gas use will expand and electric cars will begin selling in the U.S. Electric car sales will expand rapidly into 2012 and after on the back of advanced battery technologies coming online. Gasoline sales will decline each year for several years. The ethanol industry will suffer and fail by 2015. Natural gas cars will not gain favor. Natural gas will play best as a replacement for coal.

Disaster will strike the U.S. in October 2010. The American people will be drawn closer together. Crime rates will fall again.

The trade deficit will decline to levels not seen in over thirty years and will turn to a surplus in at least one month in 2010 and for all of 2011. The dollar will remain low with an uptick early in the year, falling into 2011.

The federal budget deficit will decline more than expected to well below $1 trillion, to $100 billion in 2011, to a surplus in 2012. Social Security will not go bust, neither will Medicare.

Carbon emissions will decline in the U.S. by the end of 2010. Alternative energy and increased natural gas usage will be the reason why.

Factory farms in the U.S. and Europe will suffer a bio-terror scare. Legislation to limit farm size will begin to form on both continents. Smaller, decentralized farms will be granted major tax credits.

Sarah Palin will make news; George W. Bush will, too. News networks will continue to be commentaries rather than newscasts, with personal attacks on the political party they don’t belong to. Palin will announce her candidacy and chose W as her VP.

SETI will make contact. The government will cover it up, so you will never know, except that I told you here.

The sun will rise in the east, set in the west. This will hold true for much of the year.

Babies will be born; people will marry; die. Children will smile and enjoy ice cream; adults will whine about the weather and politics. Some people will predict gloom and doom, others, hope.

You know, the more I stare at the rusty cast-iron ball, the more I realize things will be pretty much the same. Especially for the good stuff.

Note: Please do not send nasty emails. I am writing this with a wry (or is that rye) smile. I think the economic predictions have a chance, the rest are pure folly.

Man, I wish you were right about the surplus! LOL. Sadly I think the economic outlook is going to look bad for the U.S. I believe the debt will still be way to high, and almost uncontrollable. I believe China will take over as the number 1 economy in a matter of years. I believe they will grow much more than 10% soon. Just my opinon! I look forward to reading more of your hubs and "predictions". lol :)

Noted how well you wrote this with a wry or RYE comment, this in turn made me realise I should read it again whilst attempting to surround some RYE, and then maybe comment, it worked a treat, and it sure made perfect sense the second time around with the correct kind of comment of course, excellent hub, though I think you should have added Tony Blair as a possible runner with George Bush, think how much "rye" that would cause to be commented on.

Nice hub, Keith. I remember when I first read about Nostradamus. I was fascinated and shaking in my boots at the same time. Now I know that there is no sense in worrying about things that are out of our control, but instead we should do a better job of appropriately managing those things that are in our control so that we can do less worrying.

Great hub. It actually made me laugh out loud.

Rated up and given the new "funny" rating too.

I also believe that things will get better at an ever increasing rate too. Not to say that there won't be problems along the way though. Roll on 2020.

Interesting tongue -in =cheek hub. My prediction, no one will agree on anything, the earth will either be warming or cooling, al Queda will still be terrorizing the planet, health care reform will be a disaster and the earth will keep on spinning.

Keith...You left out the killing of Bin Laden and most of his cabal in a devastating multiple drone strike, throwing the entire Al Qaeda network into total disarray...and the prison sentence levied against Eric Holder for un-American activities...He will share a cell with Khalid Mohammed.

I totally disagree with all your political predictions, and your unemployment figures will increase, not decrease..

I like your humor..count me a new fan...Larry

A fun hub - I disagree on one point potentially...

"The world will not end in 2010 or 2012" - well you mention Sarah Palin will make the news...if she wins the election in 2012 then perhaps the world will end *grin*.

Seriously though, I agree with a lot of what you say - I think you are very optimistic on the defecit - I suspect we 'll see it come down by 2020 - but I hope you are right!!! You should do a follow up Hub next year on the 'results' - maybe get one of the friendly aliens to join and do their own hub on 'First Contact'!

I thought the Palin-Bush ticket thing was funny. If it does happen, you heard it hear first and I'll be front page news and get a book deal. Go me.

Kieth, I think you are pretty optimistic. But I sure can't see George Bush as Palin's running mate. Something is just wrong about a once president running for vice president. And it's so refreshing to see someone who doesn't think that the world is going to blow up in 2012.

Wow great pessimistic outlook you have, yeah I hope the US and global economy will flourish again next year so that we Hubbers will surely benefit from it, healthy economy means more internet users and advertisers in the internet and more chance we get clicks too nyahahaha... Goodluck bookmarking this for future reference...
